Job Book

home - about - contribute

"Three grand essentials to happiness in this life," wrote Joseph Addison, "are something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for." We want to help you find something to do.

What job you go after is one of the most important decisions of your life. It will affect most of your life for the rest of your life. We want to help you by providing first-hand information about what many jobs are like -- what they are really like. Right now, this information is hard to find. Suppose you are thinking of becoming a dentist. What's it like to be a dentist? you'd like to know. We want to help you answer this question. The traditional way of learning what a job is like is to do an internship. But internships take a lot of time -- months. We want to give you helpful info -- such as an interview with someone with the job you want to learn about -- within minutes. An internship only teaches you about one workplace. We want to help you learn about how one job varies from place to place.

The Internet makes this possible. It has never been possible before. The world contains hundreds of thousands of different jobs -- or millions when you realize how the same job varies from place to place. For the first time, it is possible to provide detailed first-hand information about many of them.

Anyone can contribute to this site. Librarians have a saying: Every reader his/her book; every book its reader. Almost everyone (a) has a job or (b) will have one. We want to bring these two groups together. Whatever your job, someone wants to learn about it. Whatever job you are thinking of, there is someone who would be happy to tell you about it.
